P8274- Improving the Health and Educational Opportunities of Students in Northern Cambodia
RainWater Cambodia has received funding from the German Government and KHA Organization to implement a project on "Improving Health Conditions and Learning Opportunities in Schools in Northern Cambodia through Education on Puberty and Sexuality" with activities set to begin from November 2025 to October 2027.
The project will provide support to 138 schools across 5 target districts, including Chey Saen, Chhaeb, Choam Ksant, Kulen, and Sangkom Thmei districts in Preah Vihear Province, comprising 107 primary schools and 31 secondary schools.
In the target areas, infrastructure remains limited — access to clean water and sanitation, electricity, and particularly hygienic toilets are major reasons why girls feel embarrassed and afraid of others knowing about their menstrual cycle, leading to limited hygiene practice. Furthermore, most teachers, especially in remote schools, have little experience and have rarely participated in training related to puberty, sexual health, and menstrual hygiene. These topics are often left for students to learn on their own at home, highlighting a significant gap in teacher capacity building and support. Most girls tend to feel embarrassed and lack confidence during their menstrual period, which negatively affects their studies and health.
The objective of this project is to promote education and awareness on puberty, sexual health, and menstrual hygiene for girls in schools through improving existing sanitation facilities at 31 secondary schools and providing 10,140 menstrual hygiene management (MHM) kits to girls (female students from Grades 4 to 9), contributing to reducing the use of plastic sanitary products.
